Many Londoners need to access their files and information even when away from their workplaces and computers. Additionally, they must communicate and share files with distant co-workers, which is essential during epidemic days. Moving from dropbox to SharePoint online has increased due to the high usage of Microsoft Office 365 Online Services.
Microsoft unveiled its new capability in July 2021, which allows users to use its Migration Manager to move Dropbox data to SharePoint Online in Microsoft 365.
By setting up a few computers or virtual machines (VMs) as migration “agents,” the migration manager centralises the management of extensive file share migrations. You can execute migration processes simultaneously on each laptop or virtual machine.
Thanks to this feature, Microsoft administrators now have a simpler time moving from Dropbox to Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive.

Here is a step-by-step guide for migrating Migration Manager from Dropbox to Microsoft 365.
Moving from Dropbox Outline
Step 1: Connect to Dropbox.
Step 2: Scan and assess
Step 3: Copy to the Migrations list
Step 4: Review destination paths
Step 5: Map identities
Step 6: Migrate and Monitor
There are a few prerequisites that you must fulfil before the migration, and they are as follows.
- Microsoft 365 global admin account.
- Credentials for a Dropbox account.
- Ensure that the appropriate setup is in place.
Let us get going with moving to dropbox.
Step 1. Connect to Dropbox. – Moving from Dropbox
- Select the Migration Centre after logging into the Microsoft 365 SharePoint admin centre.
- Go to Dropbox and click Get started.
- To connect to Microsoft 365 migration, choose Connect to Dropbox and Sign in with your credentials.
- By choosing Allow, you permit Microsoft to use the listed individual and team permissions.
Note: The accounts are automatically presented for you after Dropbox is connected.
Step 2. Scan and assess. – Moving from Dropbox
- Scan it, then finish it.
- Save the reports that were produced.
For logs, a review of the owners of big source data sets and debugging of problems that would prevent migration.
- For debugging logs and problems that might impede the migration process.
- Review the proprietors of significant source data
Governing users who possess many data.
After finishing your scan, download the reports and look over/contact any owners of massive source data.
Our throughput for your migration will be higher once more users are migrated. Users with substantial data sets should be divided into smaller Service Accounts to enable quick transfers.
Moving up to 1 TB of data is highly recommended to speed up the migration process. If so, you can partition large amounts of data by making each one 1 TB before the move.
Work with your Dropbox Admin to complete the following actions to create Service Accounts:
- Decide how many Service Accounts will be needed once you have identified a large user (see the example above).
- Create the Dropbox Service Accounts and give them a license.
- Determine the folder(s) from the original large user you want to transfer to the service account.
- Make the new Service Account the owner of the folder mentioned above (s). It might be necessary for the original owner to share it with the new owner first, who would then need to accept it. The original owner would then have the choice to choose the new owner as the new owner. The original owner now shares ownership of the folder, and the Source account’s permissions will change to reflect this. The folder will now appear under Shared with me instead of their My Files area.
- Create a comparable OneDrive user/SharePoint site to move the new Service Account material when migrating the Service Account.
- Before making any changes, you should speak with your tenant administrator, look into any possible source integrations or bespoke solutions, and decide whether these ownership changes would impact you.
To maximise performance, please make sure each Service Account has a unique matching Destination account when mapping.
Step 3: Copy to the Migration List. – Moving from Dropbox
- Once a Dropbox account has been inspected and easily identified, add it to your migration list.
- Choosing the Migrations tab. All users who have been copied to migration are listed in the table.
- Choose the users who are prepared to be included in the list of migrations.
- To copy to migrations, select.
- Additionally, you can pick several users.
- Go to the following step after selecting the Migrations tab.
Step 4: Review destination paths – Moving from Dropbox
The destination of the accounts you have added to the migrations list is checked to ensure accuracy in this phase. Without a specified destination, an account cannot be moved. Changing content is possible once you start moving it toward a goal.
A single location
Mark the row if a destination is missing. There will be a panel there to the right. Select Edit from the Destination menu
- Emphasize the row. Select Edit from the Destination menu.
- You can choose a path that leads to OneDrive, SharePoint, or Teams. Depending on what you decide:
- Enter the location/folder name and the OneDrive URL or email address.
- Enter the site URL and location for SharePoint.
- Choose the team and the channel under Teams.
- Choose the Save option.
Using a CSV file, upload destinations.
You can submit a bulk destinations CSV file if you have many destinations to modify. To enter your objectives, download the MigrationDestinations.csv file template to your computer. You can give your file any name you like and save it as an a.csv file.
- Choose Upload destinations from the menu bar on the Migrations tab.
- When choosing a file to upload, consider your destinations.
- Select Save.
Important:
Before uploading, check your destination CSV file to ensure you typed the information correctly. Once you migrate to these destinations, it cannot be undone because the destination file is invalid.
Step 5: Map IDs or Identities – Moving from Dropbox
Map identities of your Dropbox to Microsoft 365 accounts while using Migration Manager.
When you map user and group identities from your source environment (Dropbox) to Microsoft 365 user and group identities, you match the user and group identities that have access to your source environment. The migration process depends on this procedure. Before transfer, individualism must be configured appropriately, or users may lose access to content. Additionally, it could lead to inaccurate information at the destination.
Migrating permissions from Dropbox to SharePoint
Permissions in Dropbox convert to the following in SharePoint:
| Dropbox | SharePoint |
| Can View | Read |
| Can Edit | Contributor |
Mapped users and groups – Moving from Dropbox.
- The migration administrator might build a Microsoft 365 Group or an AD security group to map the group identities.
- Site Members and Visitors will not receive mapped users and groups. Sites do not get permissions; folders do.
Invalid permissions – Moving from Dropbox.
- Broken permission inheritance will be migrated via Migration Manager.
- Application Auth should be used for the authentication process between DropBox and Migration Manager. It is not connected to breaking permission inheritance in a subfolder if you received the error message Unable to access DropBox.
Identity on a map – Moving from Dropbox
To migrate your Dropbox sharing preferences, map your groups and users in Dropbox to those in Microsoft 365.
- Choose the Migrations tab.
- From the menu bar, choose the Map ID.
- To have Migration Manager map your identities, choose Auto-map; alternatively, choose Import users and groups to upload the values using a CSV file.
Individual identity mapping – Moving from Dropbox
- Mark the row to edit a single mapping. Enter the Microsoft 365 mapping user account.
- Select Save.
Users and groups import – Moving from Dropbox.
You can select to upload a CSV file containing the mappings for your users and groups if you have many mappings to modify. Put your destinations in the file template after downloading it to your PC. You can give your file any name you like and save it as an a.csv file.
Utilise the M to upload your user and group mappings.
- Go to Users and Groups Import.
- Insert your mappings into the mapping.csv template file after downloading it. The The.csv file can have any name you like.
- Select the file. Select after navigating to your mapping.csv file.
- Select Save.
- Select Close.
Important:
Verify your mappings carefully before uploading the file. The migration cannot be altered, and the file will not be validated.
Step 6: Migrate and Monitor – Moving from Dropbox
Once you have examined the accounts, verified the destinations, and accurately mapped identities, you are prepared to move.
- Choose the accounts you want to move.
- Select Migrate.
- A step for confirmation is shown. Click Migrate.
- When the migration starts, keep an eye on the status and the table summary at the top. This stage could take hour/s or a day/s depending on the size of your migration.
Note:
Only stuff from your Dropbox account is copied when your moving from dropbox migration is started to the Microsoft 365 location. As soon as the migration begins, the destinations cannot be changed, so double-check that they are accurate.
