Microsoft Teams update to connect LinkedIn

25 February 2022

Under the new Teams update to Connect LinkedIn, Microsoft plans to bring some of its most popular software services considerably closer in a recent upgrade to its video conferencing platform. Microsoft has revealed that it is developing a new feature linking LinkedIn profiles to Microsoft Teams.

The data will be presented in personal conversations, allowing users to learn more about their co-workers, for example, while organising a project or searching for onboarding assistance.

Under the new proposed Teams update to connect LinkedIn, According to the Microsoft 365 roadmap, the update would initially only allow users to access the LinkedIn profiles of their co-workers in 1:1 discussion. The LinkedIn tab in the 1:1 chat panel will enable users to access information on a user profile. According to the roadmap article, the functionality is available on Teams for the web and desktop.

Displaying a person’s LinkedIn profile in a discussion should be beneficial for several reasons. Users of Teams, for example, will recognise that the LinkedIn profile they’re viewing is for the person they’re conversing with rather than people with a similar name. Background information, employment history, links to blog entries and other material may all be found on LinkedIn accounts.

Teams’ updates to connect LinkedIn profiles will allow LinkedIn to exchange data from a user’s Microsoft apps to personalise their LinkedIn experience. LinkedIn will import and maintain contacts but not send invitations to users without their agreement. “However, if you link these accounts, you may learn more about an individual in any one-on-one discussion in Teams,” according to the company.

It said, “Find out what you have in common with them, discover your degrees of relationship, and join LinkedIn without leaving Teams.” The upgrade is still being developed, with Microsoft’s projected March 2022 delivery date. The capability is also highlighted as being available to all worldwide users on Microsoft Teams’ online and desktop editions. Users may view LinkedIn profiles in Teams even if their LinkedIn and Microsoft accounts are not linked. Teams update to connect LinkedIn may be a valuable tool for most external users once the device is rolled out for external users.

In 2016, Microsoft paid $26.2 billion for LinkedIn to get a foothold in the social media market. Microsoft’s most recent financial reports reveal that Productivity and Business Processes, which includes Microsoft 365 and LinkedIn, increased 19 per cent year over year to $15.9 billion.

Nevertheless, the site has struggled to penetrate the lucrative Chinese market. After Microsoft withdrew its conventional offering, Microsoft was compelled to build InCareer, an entirely new programme designed just for Chinese customers. In other regions, however, LinkedIn looks to be gaining traction. Microsoft recently announced the introduction of its global Services Marketplace for freelancers, which now includes a Hindi option, bringing the service to over 600 million people worldwide. The Teams update to connect LinkedIn might make the service more attractive for such a large user base.

Microsoft Teams continues to grow in popularity. The company’s newest data reveals that the programme has over 270 million monthly active users (MAUs). According to recent statistics from software provider StarLeaf, virtually all (97 per cent) firms now consider platforms like Teams, WebEx, and Zoom essential to their operations.
