Today, we will walk you through, how to use Microsoft Authenticator app. It is also called as two-factor authentication or two-step authentication. It will protect you from unwanted sloppy emails and intruders. This process reinforces the security of account when you enable it on your mobile device. So, it is required you to enter your password at the initial stage. Before you begin further, you need to insert a security code which will be provided to you by e-mail, SMS, phone call or by any authenticator app you are using on the mobile device.
The two-step verification will be enabled on your Microsoft account and it holistically enables the entire Microsoft services that support two-step verification such as Windows, Office, SkyDrive, and Outlook.com etc.
Here’s how to get started:
Go to the Account Settings Page, and navigate your cursor towards an email address and phone number which will be available in the section named “Security info helps keep your account secure.”
If still, you are unable to perform then click on the Add security info link and follow the suggested prompts.
The SMS mobility of 2FA depends on your phone number which will be connected to your account, so do not avoid this step. If you have skipped it inadvertently, then you will go through the access to your email account to receive the generated log-in code.
Click on the “Set up two-step verification” link.
Be continued to the setup process until the last step, then click on “Done.” Providing a verification code could be required, it will be sent to your phone through SMS ( if your SMS service is enabled) or to your email address you have mentioned. Before you proceed to complete the two-step verification setup. A confirmation email from Microsoft will be sent to your alternate email address.
Pair an authenticator app with your Microsoft account
You need to pair the authenticator app with your Microsoft account to use it.
Download the authenticator application first on your mobile device. Users of Android, iOS, or BlackBerry can download Google Authenticator app, whereas users of Windows Phone can use Microsoft Authenticator.
Go to the info page of Microsoft account security, and a prompt to set up the mobile application will be depicted. If it does not happen, click on “Set up identity verification app” under the Identity verification apps section.
Launch any of the authenticator apps as per your preference and perform the scanning of the barcode appears on the screen.
When the security code comes in the authenticator app, add it in the required section and just click on the Pair button. The process of pairing will be done.
In the end, you should know that few apps and devices are not able to support security codes. In that case, you can move towards the security info page and generate the password for application to log in.
